O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her singing ability. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the jury. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, lowest 3 and the second lowest. The judges were awed by her performance and recommended viewers to select those who sing well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it to the final two in the competition's contest, Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted shortly after her win from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
