The father of O'Grady was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in 1981. The model was featured in several commercials before making the move into Los Angeles in 1986. The first time she worked, O'Grady was a Montgomery Ward model, where she was also featured in several commercials. She first appeared on screen in the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC Drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in several shows. She appeared in both independently produced and made-for-TV movies. Her first major role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall, blonde team secretary in the series from 1993 until 1996. Each of the years she won an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by a Drama Series. She was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for outstanding performances by an ensemble in the drama series.
